Michelin widens U.S. map

Michelin is expanding its U.S. footprint beyond the coasts, formally adding Detroit and signaling intentions across the Great Lakes and the Southwest. ( ). Boston also earned six Bib Gourmand recognitions in this phase, highlighting value‑oriented venues rather than star rankings. (wror.com).

Michelin is pushing deeper into the United States, adding Detroit to a new American Great Lakes edition and widening its reach beyond the usual coastal markets. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the Great Lakes guide on April 8, 2026, and said it will cover six cities: Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. Inspectors are already visiting restaurants, and the first full selection is scheduled for 2027. (guide.michelin.com) Visit Detroit said the move makes restaurants in Detroit and the surrounding region eligible for Michelin Stars once the selection process is complete. The tourism group also said Detroit launched a Michelin Green Guide in December 2024, a separate guide focused on travel and culture rather than restaurant ratings. (visitdetroit.com; visitdetroit.com) Michelin is also shifting from single-city guides to regional editions in parts of the United States. In December 2025, it launched a Southwest edition covering Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, with the first Southwest selection due in 2026. (michelin.com; guide.michelin.com) That regional model lets Michelin cover large areas with fewer long gaps between major markets. The company said the Great Lakes guide is meant to spotlight food cultures across multiple cities, not just one downtown dining core. (guide.michelin.com; michelin.com) Boston is moving through a different part of the Michelin system. Michelin’s official Boston listings now show six Bib Gourmand restaurants, a designation for places inspectors consider good quality at a good value. (guide.michelin.com; guide.michelin.com) Michelin says its inspectors use five criteria for restaurants: product quality, cooking technique, harmony of flavors, the chef’s personality in the cuisine, and consistency across visits and the menu. Beyond Stars and Bib Gourmand, the guide also includes Green Stars, recommended restaurants and special awards. (visitdetroit.com) For Detroit, the next milestone is not a star announcement this spring but a wait until the 2027 American Great Lakes ceremony, when Michelin plans to publish its inaugural picks. Until then, the city is on the map, and the judging is already underway. (guide.michelin.com; visitdetroit.com)
