The release of Tremaine Edmunds was a calculated financial decision, freeing up $15 million in salary cap space for the Chicago Bears. This move was part of a larger team strategy to gain financial flexibility, which, combined with trading receiver DJ Moore and the retirement of center Drew Dalman, created approximately $44 million in cap room. Edmunds was in the final year of a four-year, $72 million contract he signed in 2023, which included $50 million in guaranteed money. Despite his high salary, his on-field production remained significant; in 2025, he led the team with 112 tackles and recorded four interceptions, even while missing four games due to a groin injury. Before his tenure with the Bears, Edmunds was a two-time Pro Bowl selection with the Buffalo Bills, where he began his career after being a first-round draft pick in 2018. His consistent performance is highlighted by the fact that he has recorded over 100 tackles in each of his eight NFL seasons. The Bears had given Edmunds permission to seek a trade before his release, but a suitable deal was not found.
