Tesla loses OTA director amid industry churn

Tesla lost the director behind its pioneering OTA feature and senior engineers, reflecting increasing industry churn as software expertise becomes central to automotive strategy reported.

Dmytryk's team built the infrastructure that allows Tesla owners to use the mobile app to control their cars and receive over-the-air (OTA) software updates. These updates add new features, improve existing ones, and fix recalls without requiring a service visit. Tesla recommends installing these updates as soon as possible to ensure optimal performance. His departure follows those of other long-tenured Tesla leaders, including the VP of Finance and program managers for the Model Y and Cybertruck. Dmytryk stated he is leaving to focus on family after 11 years with the company. Tesla's OTA updates are a key part of its strategy, allowing the company to improve vehicles remotely and provide new functionalities. These updates can tweak Autopilot and FSD (Supervised), adjust braking, and deliver safety fixes. The director's exit raises questions about the future direction of Tesla's autonomous driving and vehicle software. Executive turnover at Tesla, especially among those reporting to Elon Musk, has been notably high. One analysis found an annualized turnover rate of 44% for Musk's direct reports, compared to an average of 9% at other tech companies. This high turnover can cause instability and reflect concerns about the company's direction.
