Glenn Martens Tapped for Maison Margiela
Glenn Martens is the new creative director of Maison Margiela, a move expected to infuse the house's deconstructionist DNA with a more youthful, avant-garde spirit. Analysts are watching to see how Martens, known for his conceptual work at Y/Project and Diesel, will balance Margiela's intellectual edge with commercial appeal for a new audience.
The appointment connects Martens to Maison Margiela's parent company, OTB Group, where he already serves as creative director for their brand Diesel. This move consolidates the creative power of OTB chairman Renzo Rosso, placing two of his major brands under a designer known for architectural, experimental aesthetics. Martens is expected to steer the house back to the conceptual and deconstructionist principles of its founder, Martin Margiela. Margiela, who founded the house in 1988, was known for an avant-garde approach that challenged fashion norms, often using unconventional materials and revealing the construction of his garments. He famously remained anonymous throughout his career, putting the focus entirely on the clothes. This marks a significant shift from the tenure of John Galliano, who led the house for a decade. Galliano was celebrated for his theatrical, narrative-driven collections that brought a new level of romanticism and historical fantasy to the brand, culminating in his widely praised Artisanal 2024 show. His leadership saw significant commercial growth for the house. A Belgian designer and graduate of Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Martens first worked for Jean Paul Gaultier. He later took the helm of Y/Project in 2013, transforming it into a critically acclaimed label known for its bold experimentation and unorthodox silhouettes. Martens' guest-designed Haute Couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier in Spring/Summer 2022 was a critical success. The collection was praised for successfully merging Gaultier's iconic codes, like corsetry and sailor stripes, with Martens' own unique, distorted design language, offering a preview of his capabilities within a storied Parisian house.
