New "Lab-in-the-Loop" Platform Launched

Sigmatic Sciences has launched SigmaticOS, a cloud platform designed to unify AI-driven experiment design, lab automation, and data analytics. The system is being pitched as a "complete lab-in-the-loop" to better integrate computational work with physical lab experiments.

The "lab-in-the-loop" concept creates a continuous cycle: AI designs an experiment, automated robotics in the lab execute it, and the resulting data is immediately fed back to the AI to refine the next experimental design. This iterative process aims to accelerate discovery by replacing slower, manual trial-and-error. This technology addresses a major bottleneck in developing new medicines, where the traditional research and development pipeline is notoriously slow and expensive. Over 90% of drug candidates that enter clinical trials fail, often due to preclinical models that don't accurately predict human responses. Platforms like SigmaticOS are where different life science tech roles converge. A "wet lab" scientist might manage the physical robotic systems, while "dry lab" specialists in bioinformatics or computational biology would work on the AI models that analyze data and design the experiments. Bioinformatics generally involves developing the tools and algorithms to process massive biological datasets, like genomic sequences. Computational biology is more focused on using those tools and computer simulations to model and understand complex biological systems, such as how a potential drug might interact with a protein. This convergence of lab automation and AI is blurring the lines between traditionally separate fields. Future careers will increasingly require a workforce skilled in both biology and data science to manage these integrated systems, combining expertise that today might be found in separate "biotech" and "tech" roles. The company behind the platform, Sigmatic Sciences, is part of Sapio Sciences and is led by founder and CEO Kevin Cramer. Their goal is to create a unified system that orchestrates all the computational tools, data systems, and physical lab automation required for this new approach to research.
