Southwest Airlines Expands Route Network

Southwest Airlines is adding multiple new nonstop routes to its network. The carrier unveiled a direct flight between Las Vegas and Costa Rica, and also announced new service connecting El Paso with Nashville. Additionally, a nonstop flight between Memphis and Austin is scheduled to begin in October.

- The new Las Vegas (LAS) to San José, Costa Rica (SJO) service is notable as it marks Southwest's first-ever international red-eye flight. The airline only began operating domestic overnight flights in the past year. - The Austin (AUS) to Memphis (MEM) flight is a returning year-round route for the airline. Southwest is significantly expanding its presence in the Texas capital, planning its largest-ever schedule for Austin, where it is the dominant carrier despite growing competition. - These network additions are part of a broader growth strategy that includes record-breaking schedules at major airports like Austin (AUS), Las Vegas (LAS), and Nashville (BNA). - The route expansions coincide with a major transformation of the airline's business model under CEO Bob Jordan, which includes the end of its long-standing open-seating policy in favor of assigned seating starting in January 2026. - In addition to network growth, the company is focused on generating over $1 billion in incremental annual revenue by 2026 through new initiatives. These include the introduction of extra-legroom seats, which will be sold as a distinct product starting in the first half of 2026. - Financially, the airline reported record operating revenues of $28.1 billion for the full year 2025 and is forecasting adjusted earnings per share to grow by more than 300% in 2026.
