Tech firms to spend $700B on AI data centers

Tech companies are on track to spend an unprecedented $700 billion this year on building and upgrading AI data centers, according to industry executives. The massive investment is driven by surging demand for generative AI models and cloud services. Despite the scale of the spending, industry leaders insist that the sector has not yet peaked.

The spending surge is led by a handful of tech giants, with Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle alone committing to a combined $660-690 billion in infrastructure spending for 2026. This figure has nearly doubled from their planned investments for 2025, signaling a massive acceleration in the AI arms race. A significant portion of the cost, roughly 60%, is dedicated to the specialized technology and hardware required to run these advanced facilities. This includes high-performance GPUs and custom AI accelerators, which are essential for training and running large-scale AI models. The remaining budget is split between land and buildings (15%) and power and cooling infrastructure (25%). The power required for these AI data centers is substantial, with AI training facilities demanding up to 10 times the power density of traditional data centers. This has led to a significant strain on energy grids; data centers are projected to consume 9% of total U.S. power generation by 2030. Some data center operators are now building their own power generation facilities to bypass grid limitations. Beyond the immediate costs, the industry faces significant challenges in scaling, including a shortage of skilled labor for construction and operation. The cost of industrial building construction has risen over 41% since 2020, partly driven by the high demand for data centers. There is also a growing concern about the environmental impact, with increased water consumption for cooling and higher carbon emissions from the immense energy use. Looking ahead, the demand for AI-specific data center capacity is expected to continue its rapid growth. The global AI data center market is projected to expand from just over $21 billion in 2026 to more than $133 billion by 2034. This sustained investment highlights the foundational role that these specialized facilities are expected to play in the future of technology and business.
