Iran Rejects Ceasefire, Threatens Ground War

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araci declared that "Iran is ready for ground war and has rejected ceasefire negotiations" as the Israel-Iran conflict enters its sixth day. The U.S. and Israel claim "air dominance" over Iranian territory, citing destruction of multiple Iranian air defense systems. Iran's IRGC has threatened intensified retaliatory strikes in response.

The current conflict is a major escalation of a long-running proxy war between Iran and Israel. For years, the adversaries engaged in covert operations, cyber warfare, and support for opposing sides in regional conflicts. This shadow war has now erupted into direct military confrontations, marking a significant departure from previous engagements. The U.S. and Israeli air campaign has reportedly involved over 11 waves of attacks, hitting approximately 600 targets with a combined 7,000 munitions. The strikes have focused on Iranian leadership, naval assets, the IRGC, and missile launch sites, with the stated goal of debilitating Iran's missile capacity by up to 80%. The U.S. military has also deployed new weapons for the first time, including the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). In response, Iran has launched hundreds of drones and missiles in waves of attacks named "Operation True Promise 4". These have targeted not only Israel but also U.S. bases and allied nations across the Persian Gulf, including the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and for the first time, Azerbaijan. This has overwhelmed the air defenses of some Gulf allies, who are reportedly running low on interceptors. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 1,230 people reported killed in Iran. Dozens have also been killed in Lebanon due to escalating clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iran-allied group. The U.S. has reported the loss of six troops. The U.S. and Israel's "air dominance" is a result of a multi-faceted strategy that began with degrading Iran's ability to detect and respond to attacks. This allows their warplanes to operate with relative freedom over Iranian airspace, targeting even fortified underground missile bunkers, which have been turned into liabilities. The conflict has also expanded to the sea. The U.S. claimed to have sunk an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of at least 87 Iranian sailors. Iran has vowed that the U.S. will "bitterly regret" the action. The current direct conflict follows a period of heightened tensions, including a 12-day war in June 2025 that significantly degraded Iran's missile stockpiles and launch capabilities. Prior to that, a series of direct strikes and retaliations occurred throughout 2024, including an Iranian missile attack on Israel in October 2024. International repercussions are growing, with NATO increasing its ballistic missile defense posture after a missile heading toward Turkey was intercepted. The U.S. has suspended operations at its embassy in Kuwait and urged its citizens to leave the country.
