Dubai Unveils Sheikh Mohammed's Private Art

Dubai's "Collection Nights" is bringing a rare masterpiece from Sheikh Mohammed's private collection into public view for the first time. These exclusive nights are creating buzz in the Gulf's cultural scene and reinforcing Dubai's push to become a global arts destination. It's unprecedented public access to significant works from one of the region's most important private collections.

The artwork on display is an untitled 2000 piece by the late Syrian artist Moustafa Fathi. Fathi was known for using archaeological objects from sites in Syria as printmaking tools, creating paintings that can be interpreted as maps of the city. This specific work is part of the personal collection of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. "Collection Nights" is the annual, free-to-the-public program designed to showcase works from the Dubai Collection. Now in its fourth edition, the event runs for an expanded 14 days and includes not just exhibitions but also artist studio visits and tours of private collections that are typically inaccessible. The primary venue for this year's events is the Al Safa Art & Design Library. The Dubai Collection itself is a unique civic art collection for the city, established in 2021 under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed. It operates on an innovative loan-based model, bringing together significant modern and contemporary artworks from the private collections of individuals and institutions. This allows the art to remain in private ownership while being publicly accessible through exhibitions and a digital museum. This initiative is part of Dubai's broader strategy to establish itself as a global capital for innovation and the creative economy by 2025. The government's Creative Economy Strategy aims to increase the cultural sector's contribution to the GDP and has been bolstered by significant foreign direct investment. In 2023, Dubai attracted AED 11.8 billion in FDI for cultural and creative industries, creating over 21,500 new jobs. The effort is spearheaded by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The authority also oversees the Dubai Public Art strategy, which seeks to transform the city into an open-air art gallery. Further supporting this vision is the "Dubai Cultural Grant," a program set to distribute AED 180 million over a decade to foster local creative talent. The exhibition featuring Fathi's work, titled "In Attunement," explores themes of abstraction and geometry in relation to memory and place. It includes works from artists across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, such as Emirati conceptual artist Hassan Sharif and Palestinian-American abstractionist Samia Halaby. This year's theme for the Dubai Collection is "Mapping Memories: Landscapes in Flux and Geometries of the Imagination."
