Utah wildfires spike tenfold this year

Utah has recorded 31 wildfires since the start of the year, ten times the number at this point in 2023 reported.

Dry conditions and increased vegetation growth from previous wet years created more available fuel for wildfires in 2026. Human-caused fires are also on the rise, with roadside fires being a significant contributor. Negligence, such as improper disposal of debris or unattended campfires, also plays a role. The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) is responsible for wildfire prevention and response on state and private lands. They collaborate with federal agencies and local communities to reduce wildfire risk. The Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) is a federally funded program that helps communities prepare wildfire preparedness plans, reduce hazardous fuels, and conduct public outreach. The Utah Resilience Fund, established in 2020, uses public, private, and philanthropic partnerships to proactively invest in forest restoration and watershed health. This fund aims to reduce the economic and human costs of catastrophic fires while creating jobs and improving water security. They focus on fuel breaks and thinning projects to reduce fire intensity and improve ecological health.
