Google and Meta Form AI Chip Partnership

In a major move to counter Nvidia's market dominance, Google has signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to supply Meta with its custom AI chips. This new partnership signals a significant escalation in the AI hardware wars, with major tech players forming alliances to build alternative supply chains.

This multi-billion dollar, multi-year agreement is a strategic hedge for Meta against supply constraints from Nvidia, whose GPUs currently dominate the AI hardware market with a share estimated between 70% and 95%. The move to diversify its AI chip supply follows Meta's own challenges in developing its most advanced in-house processors. The deal is structured in two potential phases: initially, Meta will rent Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) via the cloud. A second, more significant phase could begin as early as next year, with Meta purchasing TPUs outright to install in its own data centers. This partnership is not exclusive. In the same timeframe, Meta also secured a deal with AMD for up to $60 billion in AI chips and continues to be one of Nvidia's largest customers, recently signing a deal for its next-generation Blackwell and Rubin GPUs. Meta's strategy is to build a diversified stack of hardware to meet its massive AI compute demands. For Google, this represents a major step in commercializing its custom silicon. TPUs are Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) designed specifically for AI workloads since 2015, which can offer performance and power efficiency advantages over general-purpose GPUs for certain tasks. The latest generation of these chips, known as "Trillium" (TPU v6), quadruples the peak compute power per chip over the previous version and is designed for massive scale. By supplying a major rival, Google is validating its TPU architecture as a viable, large-scale alternative to Nvidia's hardware and CUDA software ecosystem.
