RemotePass Launches 'SpendCards' for Global Teams

Global HR and payroll platform RemotePass has launched SpendCards, corporate cards designed to simplify expense management for international and remote teams. The move aims to eliminate reimbursement delays for distributed workforces.

RemotePass, founded in 2020 by Kamal Reggad and Karim Nadi, pivoted from a business travel SaaS platform that was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The founders' firsthand experience with the complexities of managing and paying remote teams, especially in emerging markets, led to the creation of the current platform. The company has since raised $5.5 million in Series A funding to expand its market presence and innovate its product offerings. The newly launched SpendCards are integrated directly into RemotePass's existing Employer of Record (EOR) and contractor management platform. This creates a single system for HR, payroll, and expense management across more than 150 countries. The cards, which can be issued instantly as either physical or virtual cards, are designed to eliminate the need for employees to use their own money for business expenses. Key features of the SpendCards include the ability for administrators to set customized spending limits, require receipts for purchases, and monitor all transactions in real-time from a central dashboard. This level of control aims to address the common problem of finance teams having no visibility into spending until after it has occurred. The system supports both one-time and recurring monthly spending limits, and cards can be frozen or blocked by administrators at any time. A significant issue for international teams that SpendCards address is the tax complexity of cross-border reimbursements. In some countries, reimbursing employees for certain business expenses can trigger income tax obligations, creating compliance risks for companies and financial burdens for team members. By providing a direct way for employees to spend company money, the cards are designed to bypass these reimbursement-related tax issues. The broader market for expense management for remote teams includes players like Brex, Spendesk, and Ramp, each with different strengths. Brex is noted for its global corporate card issuance in multiple currencies, while Spendesk is specifically built for the European market with a strong focus on VAT and SEPA compliance. RemotePass is positioning itself as the first global payroll platform to offer deeply integrated expense cards tailored for international workforces. The cards are available to all existing RemotePass customers and can be activated to begin issuing them within minutes. They support both Apple Pay and Google Pay and can be used globally in any currency where Mastercard is accepted. This functionality is aimed at serving a diverse client base that includes startups, publicly traded companies, and government agencies.
