Hyundai's U.S. Electrified Sales Jump 56%

Hyundai Motor America reported its third consecutive month of record sales, with a standout performance in February. Total electrified vehicle sales surged 56% year-over-year, with hybrids up 79% and EVs up 6%. The company also saw its best-ever February sales for the IONIQ 5, Tucson, and Santa Fe models.

The surge in hybrid sales, which jumped 79% year-over-year, was a primary driver of Hyundai's record February performance. This growth reflects a broader industry trend of consumers pivoting to hybrid options, a segment where Hyundai is making significant investments. Models such as the Santa Fe HEV, Tucson HEV, and Elantra HEV all posted record February sales. While the 6% growth in Hyundai's pure electric vehicle sales appears modest, the performance of the flagship IONIQ 5 was a significant outlier in the market. Sales of the IONIQ 5 surged 33% year-over-year, with 3,329 units sold, a performance attributed to aggressive pricing strategies after federal tax credits expired. This contrasts with a broader slowdown in the EV market that has prompted competitors like General Motors and Ford to adjust their EV production plans. However, not all of Hyundai's EV models shared this success. The IONIQ 6 sedan experienced a 77% slide in sales, with only 229 units sold in February. This highlights a market that is becoming increasingly specific in its EV preferences, favoring crossover and SUV models. The record-breaking month for electrified vehicles is part of Hyundai's larger strategy to significantly expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint. The company has committed to a $26 billion investment in the U.S. between 2025 and 2028, aimed at boosting vehicle production capacity and localizing its supply chain. This includes expanding its new Metaplant America in Georgia, which will produce a range of EVs and hybrids. Sister brand Kia also reported record February sales, with a 4% increase year-over-year to 66,005 vehicles. Kia's hybrid sales were also a standout, jumping 53% compared to the previous year. Together, Hyundai and Kia sold a combined 137,412 vehicles in the U.S. for the month. The Tucson nameplate was Hyundai's overall top seller in the U.S. for February. Strong demand for SUVs continues to be a major factor in the sales success of both Hyundai and Kia, with models like the Palisade and Santa Fe for Hyundai, and the Telluride for Kia, posting significant year-over-year gains.
