Vector Database Zilliz Cloud Launches on Microsoft Azure

Zilliz, the company behind the open-source vector database Milvus, has announced the general availability of its Zilliz Cloud 'Bring Your Own Cloud' (BYOC) service on Microsoft Azure. The launch extends its managed service across all major cloud platforms, giving enterprises more flexibility in deploying AI applications.

The "Bring Your Own Cloud" (BYOC) model is a direct response to enterprise needs for data control and security. It allows companies to use Zilliz's managed vector database service within their own cloud infrastructure, ensuring sensitive data for AI applications never leaves their security perimeter. This approach eliminates the trade-off between the convenience of a managed service and the security of a self-hosted deployment. Zilliz was founded in 2017 by Charles Xie, a former founding engineer for Oracle's 12c cloud database project. The company is the primary developer of Milvus, the open-source vector database it created and later contributed to the Linux Foundation. Milvus has become the world's most widely adopted vector database, with over 10,000 enterprise users and more than 100 million downloads. Vector databases are a critical component in the modern AI stack, particularly for applications using large language models (LLMs). They store and query vector embeddings—numerical representations of unstructured data like text and images—enabling semantic search, recommendation systems, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). This allows AI applications to retrieve relevant information to reduce hallucinations and provide more accurate responses. With the Azure launch, Zilliz Cloud's BYOC service is now available on all three major cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This makes Zilliz the first managed vector database provider to offer BYOC across all major clouds. The expansion includes 29 global regions, allowing companies to meet data residency and compliance requirements. The company has raised a total of $113 million in funding over four rounds. Its Series B round, which totaled over $103 million, included investors like Aramco's Prosperity7 Ventures, Hillhouse Capital, and Temasek's Pavilion Capital. Key competitors in the vector database market include Pinecone, Weaviate, and Qdrant.
