After a weekend of heavy rain, the weather system has begun to move out of the Richmond area overnight. Forecasters expect clearing skies and rising temperatures for the week ahead.

- While a direct causal link is debated, some studies suggest a correlation between falling barometric pressure, often associated with storms, and an increase in the rupture of membranes. One study found a significant increase in deliveries and rupture of membranes when barometric pressure was low. - Research has indicated that exposure to extreme rainfall during pregnancy can be associated with adverse birth outcomes, such as restricted fetal growth and premature birth. A study in Brazil found that even non-extreme intense rainfall resulted in 40% higher odds of low birth weight. - Extreme heat, which can follow storm systems, has been linked to a higher risk of preterm birth. A meta-analysis of 70 studies indicated a 16% higher risk of preterm birth on heatwave days. - In Virginia, new legislation (HB 1904), effective July 1, 2025, will allow certified nurse-midwives to serve on 24-hour on-call rosters for nursery care, addressing critical staffing shortages, especially in the 36% of Virginia counties considered "maternity care deserts". - The Virginia Department of Health recently launched new data dashboards to provide more detailed information on maternal mortality and pregnancy-associated deaths, breaking down data by locality and demographics. In 2024, Virginia's maternal mortality rate was 24.5 per 100,000 live births, a decrease from 49.2 in 2021. - According to 2022 data from the Virginia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) for the Richmond City Health District, 16.9% of mothers reported depression before pregnancy, and 45.07% of pregnancies were unintended. - To address workforce shortages, Virginia has recently enacted several key legislative changes. This includes House Bill 1923, which ensures insurance reimbursement parity for Licensed Certified Midwives and Licensed Midwives, making Virginia the first state to recognize autonomous midwifery practice with 100% fee schedule reimbursement for all nationally certified midwives.
