New Paris Flagship Champions 'Honesty in Luxury'
Designer Nina Christen has opened a flagship at 1 Rue de la Paix, built around a narrative of transparency and craftsmanship over price. The store showcases the process behind its shoes and debut handbag, positioning itself as an "anti-hype" brand and leaning into the industry's pivot toward artisanship.
Before launching her own label in 2024, Swiss-Chilean designer Nina Christen was the force behind some of the last decade's most viral footwear. Her resume includes stints at Phoebe Philo's Céline, The Row, and Loewe, where she designed the much-photographed balloon heels. Under Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta, she created the iconic Lido sandal, which Lyst named one of the "hottest shoes in the world" in 2019. Christen's personal brand builds on this high-fashion experience with a focus on longevity and production. The shoes, described by Bergdorf Goodman's chief merchant as "the perfect combination of beauty and utility," are produced in legacy, family-owned factories in Italy's Veneto region that typically only work with major luxury houses. The choice of 1 Rue de la Paix for her first store is a significant one. The street, which connects Place Vendôme to the Opéra Garnier, has been a hub for haute couture since the 19th century, previously housing designers like Charles Frederick Worth and Jeanne Paquin. The specific address was home to the couture house Madame Grès from 1942 to 1988. The store's "honesty" narrative taps into a significant market shift. Recent studies show a growing consumer disillusionment with luxury price hikes, with many feeling the quality no longer justifies the cost. As a result, European and American buyers are increasingly prioritizing craftsmanship, brand heritage, and timeless value over logos and hype. This "anti-hype" positioning is a direct response to the saturation of the luxury market and a growing consumer desire for transparency. According to a recent Bain & Company report, brands that "realign business scale with craftsmanship heritage" are seeing positive growth, with 78% of luxury buyers willing to pay more for products with transparent origins. While building her own brand, Christen is simultaneously shaping the footwear of one of Paris's most iconic houses. In June 2025, she was appointed the design director of shoes at Christian Dior, a move that solidifies her influence at the highest levels of the industry.
