NorCal 'Charming Small Towns' Getaway Guide

A new travel guide is spotlighting Northern California's most charming small towns for weekend trips, recommending places like Murphys, Nevada City, and Mendocino for their walkable main streets and local markets. For more adventurous families, suggestions also include climbing the sandstone formations at Rock City in Mount Diablo State Park.

A two-and-a-half-hour drive from Fremont, Murphys was a Gold Rush hub where brothers John and Daniel Murphy reportedly mined $2 million in gold, making them millionaires before they were 25. Today, the town's Main Street is lined with over two dozen wine-tasting rooms, many of which, like Indian Rock Vineyards, are family-friendly and offer picnic areas. Nevada City, another Gold Rush town about a three-hour drive from Fremont, boasts a downtown district with 93 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. During December, the town hosts a Victorian Christmas, closing streets to traffic for a festive market with carolers and over a hundred artisan vendors. For a coastal escape, Mendocino is roughly a three-and-a-half-hour drive north. The picturesque village is surrounded on three sides by Mendocino Headlands State Park, offering miles of gentle trails with views of sea arches and hidden grottos. Just a short drive inland, you can explore towering redwood forests. The sandstone formations at Rock City in Mount Diablo State Park are a great option for active families. The entrance fee to the park is $10 per vehicle, and while dogs are allowed in developed areas, they are not permitted on the trails. The unique wind caves and climbable boulders provide a natural playground for all ages. Beyond the main attractions, Murphys offers family adventures like exploring Mercer Caverns or Calaveras Big Trees State Park. In Mendocino, families can canoe or kayak up the Big River estuary, which is part of the Headlands State Park. For another getaway idea, the historic enclave of Niles in Fremont itself was an early epicenter for the silent film industry. Its four-block main street features antique shops and the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, offering a local and budget-friendly family outing.
