Berlin queer art opening
A new group show and book launch, “QUEERE KUNST IN DER DDR?”, opens at KVOST on March 25 with a reception from 6–9 PM and the exhibition running March 28–June 28. It’s being framed as a rare deep dive into queer creative histories from the former East Germany (berlinartlink.com).
Curated by Stephan Koal, the project foregrounds nine artists — Toni Ebel, Andreas Fux, Harry Hachmeister, Jochen Hass, Dorothea von Philipsborn, Erika Stürmer‑Alex, Rita “Tommy” Thomas, Jürgen Wittdorf and Egon Wrobel — whose biographies structure the show. The exhibition is a KVOST initiative presented in formal cooperation with the neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK), the Mitte Museum and the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge, making it a multi‑institutional program across Berlin venues. KVOST will pair the opening with a book launch produced with DISTANZ Verlag, and the printed volume is listed as part of the show’s accompanying publication program. Works on view include painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography drawn from the nine artists’ estates and collections, with selected pieces cited in the exhibition materials. The curatorial framing explicitly examines mechanisms of censorship, the role of state security and GDR cultural policy as factors shaping queer visibility and artistic practice in the former East Germany. Related program scheduling lists soft openings and coordinated events at the Mitte Museum and Werkbundarchiv as part of the exhibition’s wider public program, with venue addresses noted for accompanying displays.
