Heart-Healthy Recipes Focus on Fiber

N.O. East Hospital shared heart-healthy recipes rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats to support cholesterol and blood pressure management. Meanwhile, Danielle Brown teased a dairy-free, seed-oil-free corn soup packed with fiber veggies, paired with sourdough for gut health. Healthy Supplies also promoted homemade protein bars with nutritious ingredients for refueling.

Dietary fiber plays a significant role in heart health by lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol and helping to manage blood pressure. For every 7-gram per day increase in total dietary fiber, the risk of cardiovascular disease may be reduced. Soluble fiber, found in oats, beans, apples, and citrus fruits, binds with cholesterol in the digestive system and removes it from the body. Antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, teas, and even red wine may reduce cardiovascular risk by protecting against oxidative stress and inflammation. Polyphenols, a type of antioxidant found in plant-based foods, have been shown to improve endothelial function and reduce LDL cholesterol oxidation, a key step in the development of atherosclerosis. Healthy fats, particularly unsaturated fats from sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, are crucial for managing cholesterol levels. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats can help lower LDL cholesterol. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish like salmon and trout as well as walnuts and flaxseed, can reduce triglycerides and lower blood pressure. The gut microbiome, the community of microorganisms in our digestive system, is increasingly recognized as a key player in cardiovascular health. A healthy gut microbiome can help regulate inflammation, cholesterol, and blood pressure. The fermentation process in sourdough bread, for instance, produces compounds that can support a healthy gut. Making protein bars at home allows for control over ingredients, avoiding the added sugars and preservatives often found in commercial options. Store-bought bars can be high in calories and may contain sugar alcohols that cause digestive discomfort. Homemade versions can be customized to include more fiber and whole-food ingredients.
