Helldivers 2 Adds Armor Rarity

The cooperative shooter's latest major update introduces an armor rarity system and expanded customization options, adding an additional layer of progression and personalization. Early community feedback suggests this change is well-received, with many expressing excitement about "the chance to stand out visually and earn status through gameplay rather than just microtransactions." However, some players are concerned about potential balance issues emerging from gear rarity.

Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has built a reputation on its motto, "A game for everyone is a game for no one," focusing on creating challenging cooperative experiences. The studio's CCO, Johan Pilestedt, has publicly stated a philosophy of needing to "earn the right to monetize," a sentiment that has resonated with the game's player base. *Helldivers 2*'s monetization model primarily revolves around non-expiring battle passes called "Warbonds" and a premium currency, Super Credits. These Super Credits, used to purchase premium Warbonds and rotating cosmetic armor, can be bought with real money or found during gameplay missions, a system generally praised by players for being fair. Prior to this update, the game's armor system faced criticism from the community. Many players found that the "Armor Rating" stat offered minimal tangible benefits, leading them to favor light armor for its superior mobility regardless of the listed defensive stats. This long-standing issue prompted calls for a significant rework to make armor choices more meaningful. Currently, the primary differentiator between armor sets, beyond their weight class, is their passive ability. These built-in perks range from increasing grenade capacity and providing resistance to explosive damage to having a 50% chance to survive otherwise lethal damage. The introduction of rarity adds a new layer to this existing system of stats and passives. Dataminers and leakers had previously discovered evidence of colored tiers for gear in the game's files, suggesting that a rarity system has been in development at Arrowhead for some time. Arrowhead has a history of responding to player feedback, though not always without controversy over the direction of balance changes. The studio recently implemented an official feedback form via its Discord server to better collate player thoughts on everything from weapon balance to armor and gameplay mechanics.
