Stearns Wins Austin Title
Peyton Stearns claimed her 2nd career WTA title at the Austin Open, beating Taylor Townsend 7-6(10), 7-5 in a 2h22m thriller. Stearns saved multiple set points including three in the opener, securing her first home tournament victory. The win also exemplifies the college tennis pipeline to the professional ranks — Stearns was an NCAA champion before turning pro.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Peyton Stearns, who had previously been on a losing streak in Austin, having been eliminated in the first round in the tournament's last two editions. This win is her second career WTA singles title and her first on a hard court. The win is projected to boost Stearns' ranking from No. 62 to No. 48, propelling her back into the top 50. For Taylor Townsend, reaching her first-ever WTA singles final at age 29 was a career milestone. Despite the loss, her performance is expected to elevate her singles ranking from No. 119 to No. 87, securing her a spot in the top 100. Before turning professional in June 2022, Stearns had a decorated career at the University of Texas, which is located in Austin. In 2022, she became the first player in the university's history to win the NCAA Division I Women's Singles National Championship. That same year, she also led the Longhorns to their second consecutive NCAA team title. The Austin Open, a WTA 250 event held at the Westwood Country Club, is a relatively new tournament, with its inaugural event taking place in 2023. This year's final was the second consecutive all-American final at the tournament. Townsend, a former world No. 1 in doubles with two Grand Slam doubles titles, showcased her singles prowess throughout the tournament. Her journey to the final included a dramatic comeback in the semifinals against Ashlyn Krueger, where she rallied from a 0-4 deficit in the first set. Both players are now expected to compete at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
