Paddington Musical Sweeps Awards

Paddington becomes the first new West End musical to win nine WhatsOnStage Awards, equalling records set by *Miss Saigon* and *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*. The show, praised for its animatronics and family-friendly appeal, is now a must-see on the London stage.

The "Paddington" musical's impressive haul at the 26th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards included the coveted title of Best New Musical. The production also secured Best Direction for Luke Sheppard, alongside a string of design and technical awards for its set, costumes, sound, and casting. The creative team behind the beloved bear's stage debut includes McFly's Tom Fletcher, who wrote the music and lyrics, and Jessica Swale, who penned the book. The musical is based on Michael Bond's original books and the successful 2014 film. The show began previews at the Savoy Theatre on November 1, 2025. A significant aspect of the show's praise has been directed at the lifelike Paddington puppet. The bear is brought to the stage through a combination of an on-stage performer, Arti Shah, and an off-stage voice and remote puppeteer, James Hameed. The intricate animatronic head was designed by Tahra Zafar, who has also worked on creatures for the first *Harry Potter* film and costumes for the 2012 London Olympics. Director Luke Sheppard is a celebrated figure in the theatre world, with previous successes including the international hit musical *& Juliet*, which won six WhatsOnStage Awards and three Olivier Awards. His other notable productions include *Starlight Express* and *The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾*. The WhatsOnStage Awards are voted for entirely by the public, making "Paddington's" record-equalling nine wins a testament to its popular appeal. Other major winners on the night included Rachel Zegler for her performance in the Best Musical Revival winner, *Evita*, and Jonathan Bailey, who won Best Performer in a Play for *Richard II*. The musical has received glowing reviews since its opening. Critics have lauded its heartwarming story, imaginative staging, and the successful celebration of kindness and tolerance. Due to its immense popularity and critical acclaim, the "Paddington" musical is currently booking at the Savoy Theatre until May 30, 2027, with tickets in high demand. A cast recording was released in March 2026.
