Logging closures near Bogus Basin

Temporary recreation closures begin April 13 near Bogus Basin as the Forest Service restarts the second season of logging and restoration work under the Deer Point Forest Stewardship Project about one mile south of the ski area (kivitv.com). The work is described as wildfire‑risk reduction rather than an emergency closure, but it will affect trails and access immediately (kivitv.com).

Weekday closures started Monday, April 13, on roads, trails and forest land south of Bogus Basin as the Deer Point logging project entered its second season. (fs.usda.gov) The Boise National Forest said the work site is about 1 mile south of Bogus Basin, and the closure order runs from April 13 through June 19. The Forest Service listed Stack Rock Trailhead among the affected recreation sites. (fs.usda.gov) KIVI reported Bogus Basin Road will close at mile marker 12 to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The station said weekend access will remain open and the weekday traffic restrictions are scheduled through June 19. (kivitv.com) The project is not a fire response. The Forest Service said it is planned forest management aimed at lowering the risk of catastrophic wildfire and dealing with insect and disease damage in the Boise Foothills. (fs.usda.gov) The agency launched Deer Point in 2025 as a four-year, 1,300-acre effort in the wildland-urban interface, the zone where forest and housing meet. The plan combines commercial logging on selected species with removal of hazardous trees near roads and trails. (fs.usda.gov) (idahocapitalsun.com) Forest managers said the work is also meant to shift the stand away from Douglas-fir, which is more vulnerable there to dwarf mistletoe and bark beetles, while leaving most ponderosa pine standing because it is more fire tolerant. (fs.usda.gov) The Forest Service said closures will change as work moves through the project area through 2028, and it plans to post updates on its alerts page and social channels. Trail status is also being tracked on the Ridge to Rivers interactive map. (fs.usda.gov) (idahocapitalsun.com) For now, the practical change is immediate: weekday access near Deer Point is restricted for logging crews, while weekend recreation near Bogus Basin remains available.
