Fremont Hosts Annual FOG Holi Festival

Fremont’s annual FOG Holi festival took place on March 7th at Washington High School. The popular Hindu celebration of colors, featuring music and dance, drew large crowds and highlights the cultural diversity and growing South Asian community in the East Bay.

The annual FOG Holi festival, organized by the Federation of Indo-Americans of Northern California (FIA), is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the Bay Area, often drawing crowds of over 5,000 people. The event, which celebrates the Hindu festival of colors, love, and spring, has become a significant cultural fixture in Fremont. Beyond the vibrant color-throwing, the festival features nonstop Bollywood music, dance performances from local studios, and a variety of Indian food, reflecting the deep cultural roots of the community. Fremont's demographic landscape is intrinsically linked to the growth of Silicon Valley's tech sector. The city has one of the largest concentrations of Indian-Americans in the country, a community that has seen rapid expansion over the last two decades. This growth has been fueled in part by the demand for engineering talent in the region, with a significant number of residents working in the technology and semiconductor industries. The festival's location in Fremont is no coincidence. The city is a major hub for advanced manufacturing and semiconductor companies. This includes the headquarters of Lam Research, a key player in the semiconductor industry, which has a stated focus on community engagement and fostering inclusive societies. The concentration of tech professionals of South Asian descent in this area creates a self-reinforcing ecosystem of cultural and professional networks. While direct corporate sponsorship of the FOG Holi festival by major tech firms is not always prominent, the intersection of the tech industry and the community is undeniable. Companies like Apple support a variety of employee resource groups, known as Diversity Network Associations, which include groups for employees of South Asian origin. These groups play a crucial role in talent retention and fostering an inclusive work environment that resonates with the local community's cultural calendar.
