East Providence dairy reports $140K blizzard loss
Munroe Dairy in East Providence reports a $140,000 loss after the Blizzard of ’26 disrupted deliveries for two days.
The dairy attributed the $140,000 loss to being unable to make deliveries for two consecutive days, a situation that hasn't occurred since the blizzard of 1978. This resulted in a large amount of undelivered and unsaleable product. Munroe Dairy had adjusted its delivery schedule multiple times leading up to the storm, but the severity of the blizzard made it impossible to complete routes. Some side streets remained difficult to navigate even after the storm, with drivers given the discretion to skip deliveries if safety was a concern. The dairy has been delivering milk and other staples since 1881, serving over 13,000 customers across Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Despite the financial setback, Munroe Dairy leadership affirmed the company's resilience and commitment to recovering from the blizzard's impact. While fluid milk consumption has been declining, Munroe Dairy has adapted by offering a wider range of grocery items, operating as a "rolling grocery store". They source milk from local farms, process it with strict quality control, and deliver it in reusable glass bottles, emphasizing freshness and sustainability.
