Agentic AI Disrupts SaaS, Fintech Models

Microsoft's agentic AI, exemplified by Copilot CoWork, is threatening traditional SaaS and fintech business models by working directly on raw data, bypassing user interfaces, and potentially making software subscriptions obsolete. Wall Street reacted with stock hits, recognizing the structural business risk.

Agentic AI, exemplified by Microsoft's Copilot CoWork, represents a shift from traditional AI, enabling systems to make decisions and execute tasks autonomously with minimal human oversight. Unlike traditional AI, which primarily responds to commands or analyzes data, agentic AI can set goals, plan, and execute tasks independently. Copilot CoWork, built on Anthropic's Claude, can use information in your files, email, and calendar to independently complete assignments. For example, it can create spreadsheets, run reports, and conduct research autonomously. It can also handle tasks such as rescheduling meetings, drafting presentations, running workflows, and coordinating projects. Microsoft launched Copilot Cowork on March 9, 2026, alongside a new E7 tier costing $99 per user per month, bundling Copilot, identity tools, and agent management. However, only 3% of Microsoft 365 customers subscribe to the paid version of Copilot. The SaaS market is projected to reach over $315 billion in 2025 and $1.13 trillion by 2032. However, IDC predicts that pure seat-based pricing will be obsolete by 2028, with 70% of software vendors refactoring their pricing strategies around new value metrics.
