The M4 chip family is built on a second-generation 3-nanometer process, packing 28 billion transistors, which is 3 billion more than its M3 predecessor. This enhanced architecture features up to a 10-core CPU in the base M4, with the M4 Max scaling up to a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. Apple's focus on AI is evident with an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine capable of 38 trillion operations per second, designed to accelerate machine learning tasks and power features within macOS.
