OpenAI shifts cloud reach

OpenAI's new revenue chief told staff that Microsoft had limited the company's ability to reach some enterprise customers and highlighted a new alliance with Amazon as a way to widen distribution. The memo described inbound enterprise demand as “frankly staggering” and framed the AWS tie-up as a route to customers the Microsoft alignment had constrained. (cnbc.com) (qz.com)

OpenAI is widening how it sells artificial intelligence tools to big companies, telling staff that its Amazon tie-up reaches customers its Microsoft deal did not. (cnbc.com) In a Sunday memo reviewed by CNBC, chief revenue officer Denise Dresser said Microsoft had been “foundational” but had also limited OpenAI’s ability to meet enterprise customers on their preferred platforms. She pointed to Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Web Services’ marketplace for artificial intelligence models, as the opening. (cnbc.com) (aws.amazon.com) OpenAI and Amazon announced that partnership on February 27, 2026. The companies said OpenAI models and a new “Stateful Runtime Environment” would be offered through Amazon Bedrock, and Amazon said it would invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI. (openai.com) (aboutamazon.com) The cloud piece is the point. Many large companies already buy computing, security, and software from one cloud provider, and Bedrock lets them add outside models inside Amazon Web Services instead of shifting workloads to Microsoft Azure. (aws.amazon.com) (cnbc.com) That marks a change from the OpenAI-Microsoft structure restated last month. In a joint statement, the companies said Microsoft remains the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI’s stateless application programming interfaces, while revenue sharing still applies to partnerships with other cloud providers. (openai.com) (blogs.microsoft.com) The split now looks more defined: Microsoft keeps a central role in OpenAI’s direct application programming interface business, while Amazon becomes the exclusive third-party cloud distributor for OpenAI Frontier, a product for building and managing teams of software agents. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) Dresser told staff inbound demand for the Amazon offering was “frankly staggering,” according to CNBC. That memo framed the Bedrock route as a way to reach customers that had been harder to win under the Microsoft alignment. (cnbc.com) Microsoft and OpenAI have not publicly presented the shift as a breakup. Their March joint statement said the commercial relationship and revenue share were unchanged, even as OpenAI expanded to other clouds for specific products. (openai.com) The result is a broader sales map for OpenAI in 2026: direct sales, Microsoft Azure for core application programming interface access, and Amazon Web Services for Bedrock distribution and new agent products. That gives OpenAI more ways to land inside corporate tech stacks without cutting Microsoft out entirely. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2)
