Lisbon Marathon Joins Elite European Circuit

The Lisbon Marathon will join the European Marathon Classics circuit, a group that includes major races like the London Marathon. The move, announced in Vienna, is intended to raise the international profile of the Lisbon event.

The newly formed European Marathon Classics aims to unite eight "iconic" marathons, creating a continental challenge that celebrates a shared European identity through running. Lisbon joins a prestigious group that includes marathons in Rome, Madrid, London, Copenhagen, Vienna, Warsaw, and Frankfurt. The circuit was officially launched at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, with organizers emphasizing a mission beyond running, focusing on health, community, and responsible tourism. Hugh Brasher, Event Director of the TCS London Marathon, is one of the key figures behind the initiative. The EDP Lisbon Marathon, which holds a "World Athletics Elite Label," is known for its exceptionally scenic course, running 100% along the sea and Tagus river. The race starts in the seaside town of Cascais and finishes in Lisbon's famous Praça do Comércio. Participation in the new circuit is free for runners, who can earn the title of "European Marathon Classics Finisher" by completing five of the eight races. There is no time limit to complete the series, offering a flexible, long-term goal for international runners. A unique feature of the series is the recognition of past results. Runners will be able to add verified finishes from any of the eight marathons dating back to their inaugural editions, with Lisbon's history in the series stretching back to 1986.
