D&D Goes Live-Service Style

Dungeons & Dragons is shifting to themed seasonal releases in 2026, taking inspiration from video game live-service models. Wizards of the Coast's roadmap includes a return to Ravenloft with "The Horrors Within" and more regular, dynamic content to keep tabletop campaigns fresh year-round.

This new seasonal structure marks a significant departure from D&D's traditional release model, which historically revolved around the periodic release of core rulebooks for new editions every few years, supplemented by a less formally structured assortment of adventure modules and setting guides. The change is intended to create a more predictable and steady stream of content, with organized play and community events centered around each season's theme. The first of these themed content drops, the "Season of Horror," will run from April to June 2026. It's anchored by the sourcebook *Ravenloft: The Horrors Within*, a deep dive into the horror setting that will include new subclasses, species, backgrounds, and "Dark Gift" feats for players. This release will be supported by a new Tarokka Deck, a themed Dungeon Master's screen, and a map pack. Following the "Season of Horror," a "Season of Magic" is slated for July through September. This season will be headlined by the *Arcana Unleashed* sourcebook, which introduces high-magic character options and a system for magic items that level up with the player. It will be accompanied by a related adventure called *Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall*, focusing on the notorious Red Wizards of Thay. The year will conclude with the "Season of Champions" from October to December, though specifics about its anchor products have not yet been announced. This seasonal approach, grouping major releases with themed accessories and adventures, mirrors the content delivery model of popular live-service video games like those from Bungie or Blizzard. The move is part of a broader strategy by parent company Hasbro to better coordinate its D&D products across different platforms.
