Joe Lovano Named Detroit Jazz Artist
Grammy-winning saxophonist Joe Lovano has been named the 2026 Artist-in-Residence for the Detroit Jazz Festival. Lovano is expected to perform with several ensembles, including his Paramount Quartet and in a tribute to John Coltrane, promising a diverse program for festival-goers later this year.
- The year 2026 marks the centennial of John Coltrane's birth, with a global celebration titled "COLTRANE 100" planned to honor his legacy. Lovano's tribute is part of this worldwide commemoration, which will also include the first-ever official release of long-mythologized private live recordings known as the "Tiberi Tapes". - As Artist-in-Residence, Lovano joins a prestigious list of past honorees that includes drummer Brian Blade (2024), Detroit native and producer Karriem Riggins (2023), Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés (2022), and bassist Stanley Clarke (2019). - The Detroit Jazz Festival is the world's largest free jazz festival, held annually over Labor Day weekend in downtown Detroit. It is produced by the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation, a non-profit organization that relies on philanthropic support to keep the event free for all attendees. - Lovano's Paramount Quartet, one of the ensembles he will perform with, features virtuoso guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Asante Santi Debriano, and drummer Will Calhoun of the rock band Living Colour. The group debuted at the Village Vanguard in February 2024 after a benefit performance brought Lovano, Debriano, and Calhoun together. - Lovano has a long history of paying homage to John Coltrane, a key early influence, and has previously participated in tributes and recorded albums dedicated to his music. - Beyond his work as a performer, Lovano is a dedicated educator, holding the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance at his alma mater, Berklee College of Music, and serving as a founding faculty member of the college's Global Jazz Institute. - Lovano's career includes a prolific 25-album stint as a leader for the historic Blue Note Records from 1991 to 2016 and numerous accolades, including multiple wins in *DownBeat* magazine's prestigious critics' and readers' polls. - His recent projects also include the spacious and lyrical "Trio Tapestry" with pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi, which has released three albums on the ECM record label.
