US-Iran War Escalates, US Embassy Attacked

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was struck by drones, dramatically widening the war's scope. The U.S. has begun evacuating regional diplomatic staff, with President Trump warning, “This could be an extended war.” Meanwhile, Senator Marco Rubio promised Iran that “the hardest hits are yet to come.”

The drone strike on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh involved two drones and caused a "limited fire" and minor damage to the building, according to the Saudi Ministry of Defense. The embassy has since closed and canceled all appointments until further notice. In response to the attack, the U.S. Embassy issued a shelter-in-place notification for American citizens in Riyadh, as well as in Jeddah and Dhahran. This follows a broader regional evacuation of non-emergency U.S. diplomatic personnel and their families from countries including Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Qatar, and Jordan. The attack is part of a wider retaliatory campaign by Iran following joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that began on Saturday. Iran has also targeted energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and has threatened the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global oil trade. The escalating conflict has resulted in casualties, with the Iranian Red Crescent reporting 787 deaths in Iran from the U.S.-Israeli strikes. Six U.S. service members have been killed in the wider conflict. This direct targeting of a U.S. diplomatic mission in a key allied nation represents a significant escalation. Saudi Arabia has condemned the "flagrant Iranian attack" and asserted its right to respond. The broader conflict began after joint U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran, which reportedly included strikes on nuclear facilities and resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The U.S. State Department has now urged American citizens to depart from more than a dozen countries and territories in the Middle East due to the increasing safety risks. This expanding conflict has also impacted global markets and infrastructure, with reports of Amazon Web Services data centers in the Middle East being knocked offline by drone strikes.
