Yosemite Family Visits Go Viral

Bay Area families are sharing Yosemite adventures on social media, with one post about a first-time family trip via the southeastern entrance along the Merced River earning 99 likes and 1.4K views. Another 7-mile Matt Davis Trail loop from Stinson Beach in Marin County is being highlighted for its warm sunshine and packed beaches.

The "southeastern entrance" to Yosemite is likely the South Entrance on Highway 41, the park's most popular gateway. This route provides the most direct access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, home to over 500 mature giant sequoia trees. From this entrance, the drive to the iconic Yosemite Valley typically takes about an hour. Flowing through Yosemite Valley, the Merced River is a prime corridor for wildlife viewing. Visitors are often treated to sightings of mule deer, coyotes, and even black bears along its banks. The river canyon also holds deep historical significance as the ancestral home for Native American tribes like the Mono-Paiute and Miwok. The Matt Davis Trail is a key part of the trail system on Mount Tamalpais, offering a diverse hiking experience. It can be combined with the iconic Dipsea and Steep Ravine trails for a popular 7-mile loop that includes redwood groves, waterfalls, and a steep ladder climb. The trail features a significant elevation gain of approximately 1,700 feet from Stinson Beach to the Pantoll Ranger Station. Stinson Beach, a popular destination attracting about 750,000 visitors annually, faces a critical environmental challenge. A recent analysis indicates that with a 1.6-foot sea level rise, projected to occur between 2040 and 2050, the beach could lose 30 to 40 percent of its area. In response to the threat of rising sea levels, a comprehensive report has outlined a potential $1.2 billion plan to implement adaptive measures. Without action, property damage from a major storm, combined with 3.3 feet of sea level rise, could skyrocket to $1.3 billion, impacting nearly the entire community. This is particularly complex as only about 15% of the town's homes are primary residences.
