City Approves 'Green Streets' Initiative

The city council approved a $1.2 million grant for the 'Green Streets' initiative, planting trees and installing permeable pavement downtown.

The 'Green Streets' initiative aims to manage stormwater runoff by using natural processes. Green streets incorporate various design elements such as street trees, permeable pavements, and bioretention areas. These elements help to capture, slow down, and filter runoff, which allows it to recharge groundwater. Permeable pavements are a key feature of green streets, allowing water to pass through the surface and into the ground. This reduces the amount of stormwater runoff, lessening the burden on sewer systems and helping to prevent flooding. In Portland, Oregon, a parking lot retrofit using permeable pavers reduced stormwater runoff by 98% during typical rainfall events. Green Streets offer multiple benefits, including improved water quality, reduced urban heat island effect, and enhanced community livability. They can also improve pedestrian and bicycle safety by calming traffic with vegetated curb extensions. Furthermore, green streets can increase property values and create jobs.
