Duke Caps Undefeated Regular Season
No. 1 Duke capped an outstanding season with a decisive 76-61 win over No. 17 North Carolina in their regular season finale. Gabriel Jackson led the Blue Devils who controlled the game from start to finish, further solidifying their case for a No. 1 overall seed heading into Selection Sunday next week.
This marks Duke's third undefeated season in ACC regular-season play, and the first since the 1998-99 team that also finished the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. That 1999 team, however, fell in the National Championship game. The Blue Devils also went undefeated in the ACC in 1963. Freshman phenom Cameron Boozer was the star of the finale, finishing with a dominant 26 points and 15 rebounds for his 17th double-double of the season. Boozer, one of the highly-touted Boozer twins, has been a major force behind Duke's perfect season. In the win over UNC, four Blue Devils scored in double figures, including senior Maliq Brown who had 15 points. The Blue Devils' stifling defense was on full display in the second half, holding the Tar Heels to just 27 points. At one point, Duke went on a 24-2 run and held North Carolina to just one made basket over an 11-minute stretch. This defensive intensity has been a hallmark of their seven-game winning streak leading into the UNC matchup, where they held opponents to an average of 57 points per game. North Carolina was without their own star freshman, Caleb Wilson, who was sidelined with a season-ending thumb injury suffered in practice just days before the game. Wilson had been a key player for the Tar Heels throughout the season. With the regular season complete, Duke enters the ACC Tournament as the undisputed No. 1 seed and a lock for a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils have their sights set on their first national championship since 2015. The victory was also a significant milestone for second-year head coach Jon Scheyer, who has continued the program's success after taking over from the legendary Mike Krzyzewski. The win extended Duke's home winning streak to 32 games.
