Accel-KKR Bets on Fleet SaaS

Growth equity firm Accel-KKR announced a majority investment in Whip Around, a provider of fleet maintenance software. The deal underscores PE and growth equity's continued appetite for vertical SaaS platforms that digitize old-school industries like logistics and transportation.

While the financial terms were not disclosed, the deal required Overseas Investment Office approval in New Zealand, indicating a valuation of over $100 million. This majority stake provides an exit for some early investors and founders, while CEO Noah Hickey and venture firm Punakaiki Fund are set to remain with the company. Whip Around was founded in 2016 by James Colley, who saw the inefficiency of paper-based systems firsthand while working at logistics giants DHL and Toll, and Tim Boyle, who had a background in industrial property. The company's goal was to digitize the mandatory walk-around vehicle inspections for truckers, tackling a major compliance headache. Prior to this majority investment, Whip Around had raised a US$14 million Series B in December 2021. That round was co-led by New Zealand's Punakaiki Fund and the US-based VC firm Amplo, which counts former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir John Key as an advisor. This acquisition is part of a larger trend of private equity flowing into supply chain and logistics technology. PE firms are increasingly targeting asset-light SaaS companies that drive operational efficiency in traditional industries, moving away from asset-heavy carriers. Accel-KKR's investment strategy often involves not just providing capital but also fueling growth through strategic acquisitions. The partnership will likely see Whip Around expand its platform capabilities and pursue M&A opportunities to consolidate its market position. The fleet management software market is experiencing significant growth, with forecasts projecting it to expand from over $30 billion in 2026 to more than $150 billion by 2034. This growth is driven by the need for fuel cost optimization, regulatory compliance, and the rapid expansion of e-commerce. Though founded in New Zealand, Whip Around has a significant operational presence in the U.S., including a sales office in Charlotte, North Carolina, and generates about 90% of its revenue from U.S. customers. The company serves around 1,000 customers, focusing primarily on the small-to-mid-market segment.
