Michelin shifts: NYC & São Paulo

Michelin added nine new restaurants to its New York guide in April, with a strong showing from Brooklyn entrants in this round of additions. Michelin’s latest moves split in two directions this week: New York added nine restaurants to its guide in April, while São Paulo produced Latin America’s first new three-star winners. (ny.eater.com) (guide.michelin.com) In New York, Michelin’s March 25 update said new restaurants are added to the Selection twice a year, before stars and Bib Gourmands are announced at the annual ceremony. The April round highlighted Brooklyn heavily, with additions in Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, Crown Heights, Park Slope, and Williamsburg. (guide.michelin.com) (ny.eater.com) The Brooklyn group included Entre Nous in Clinton Hill, Los Burritos Juárez in Fort Greene, Bong in Crown Heights, Vato in Park Slope, and I Cavallini in Williamsburg. Manhattan additions included Le Chêne in Greenwich Village and Hwaro in Midtown West. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin’s New York additions are not stars yet. Michelin says the “New” label marks restaurants added to the guide now, while stars and Bib Gourmands are held for the city’s annual ceremony later in the year. (guide.michelin.com) That staging matters in New York because the city’s last star ceremony, published on November 18, 2025, gave Sushi Sho a third star and added new one-star and two-star promotions across the city. The 2026 additions are the first public clues about which newer restaurants inspectors are tracking for the next awards cycle. (guide.michelin.com) (ny.eater.com) In Brazil, Michelin’s 2026 Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo ceremony took place on April 13 at the Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro. Michelin said Evvai and Tuju, both in São Paulo, became the first restaurants in Brazil and Latin America to receive three Michelin stars. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin said the 2026 Brazil guide kept its total selection at 149 establishments and added 12 new addresses this year. The guide said local Brazilian cooking, plus Italian and Japanese influences, stood out across Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. (guide.michelin.com) Evvai is led by chef Luiz Filipe Souza, and Michelin said its tasting menu blends Brazilian and Italian influences; Tuju is led by chef Ivan Ralston, and Michelin described the restaurant as a three-floor dining progression built around Brazilian ingredients. Michelin’s separate inspector features this week said Evvai opened in 2017 and Tuju’s cellar holds more than 5,000 labels. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) Taken together, the April updates show Michelin using two different signals at once: in New York, inspectors are flagging likely contenders before the next ceremony; in São Paulo, they have already redrawn the top of the map.
