Churchill Landscape Debuts at Chartwell

A landscape painting by Sir Winston Churchill will go on display at Chartwell in the UK for the first time, offering a rare glimpse into the creative pursuits of the famed statesman. The artwork provides insight into Churchill's lesser-known artistic side beyond his political legacy.

The newly displayed painting, titled 'Quiet Waters', was originally a gift from Churchill to his friend, the press baron Lord Beaverbrook, for his 80th birthday in 1959. It is now on loan from the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation and is being exhibited alongside Churchill's well-used painting coat and steel-framed glasses. Churchill only began painting at the age of 40, in 1915, following the disastrous Gallipoli campaign which led to his resignation as First Lord of the Admiralty. He found painting to be a rescue from the bouts of depression he referred to as his "black dog," and it became a lifelong passion. Over his lifetime, Churchill produced more than 550 paintings, primarily focusing on landscapes and seascapes. He was encouraged by professional artists like Sir Alfred Munnings and Sir John Lavery, and his dedication led to him being named an Honorary Academician Extraordinary by the Royal Academy of Arts, the only amateur artist to receive the honor. Chartwell, his family home in Kent for over four decades, was his sanctuary. He constructed a studio on the property in the 1930s, laying the bricks himself, which now houses the largest collection of his artwork. The estate and its views were a frequent source of inspiration for his canvases. Though he often self-deprecatingly referred to his works as "daubs," Churchill's paintings have commanded significant prices at auction. In 2021, his 1943 painting "Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque"—the only work he completed during World War II—sold for over $11.5 million. Other works have also sold for millions, reflecting a strong market for his art.
