Taipei Ramen Spot Disrupts LA with $2 Beer

Ramen Chikumo, a highly-rated restaurant from Taipei, is shaking up the Sawtelle ramen scene. The eatery just launched a $2 Sapporo beer special, a disruptive pricing strategy aimed at attracting customers and challenging established local competitors.

Ramen Chikumo built its reputation in what locals call Taipei's "first-tier ramen war zone," operating until 3 or 4 AM and earning consistent 4.7+ star ratings across more than 10,000 reviews. The brand is known for its Tori-Paitan, a creamy chicken-based broth, which distinguishes it from the pork-based Tonkotsu that is more common in Los Angeles. The LA location is the brand's first expansion beyond Taiwan. Its menu focuses on this signature chicken broth, simmered for over 12 hours, and also features egg-free custom noodles and low-temperature cooked chashu. Main ramen bowls are priced at approximately $18-$19. The $2 Sapporo beer promotion, running through March 31, 2026, represents a 75% discount from the restaurant's regular $8 price for a 16oz draft. This pricing strategy is a significant undercut of competitors in the Sawtelle Japantown area, a neighborhood known for its high concentration of popular ramen shops. For comparison, nearby competitor Daikokuya charges $5.50 for a 14oz Sapporo draft. Another Sawtelle ramen institution, Tsujita, offers its own branded craft pale ale for $12 a can. This positions Chikumo's special as a notably aggressive customer acquisition tactic in a competitive market. In addition to the disruptive beer pricing, Ramen Chikumo is also offering 90 minutes of validated parking, directly addressing a common point of friction for diners in the dense and popular Sawtelle neighborhood.
