Massive transformer explosion at CET Vest

- A transformer ruptured at Bucharest's CET Vest plant, triggering a large explosion and subsequent fire. - Approximately 30 tons of oil were in the 10,000 kW transformer, and authorities report injured workers. - Emergency services are investigating and the blast disrupted district heating supply locally (transformers-magazine.com).

A fire at Bucharest’s CET Vest heating plant knocked the facility offline overnight after electrical faults spread into two transformers. (elcen.ro) Electrocentrale București, or ELCEN, said the incident began late on April 20 in a 6 kilovolt internal station, where damage to a direct-current control panel disabled protection systems and let the fault cascade into two 110/6 kilovolt transformers. (elcen.ro) The Bucharest-Ilfov emergency inspectorate said both transformers used oil for cooling, about 30 tons each, and firefighters sent seven fire engines, eight tankers, a nitrogen truck, a ladder unit, a SMURD intensive-care unit and other rescue vehicles to the site on Timișoara Boulevard. (agerpres.ro) A transformer is the heavy electrical equipment that steps voltage up or down, and the oil inside works like coolant in a car engine while also insulating live parts. When that oil catches fire, the blaze becomes harder to control and can spread heat fast through nearby switchgear. (transformers-magazine.com) CET Vest is one of the plants that feed Bucharest’s district-heating network, the centralized system that sends hot water and heat to apartment blocks through city pipes. With CET Vest unable to run, ELCEN said CET Grozăvești was taking over its consumers, while HotNews reported that thousands of apartments lost hot water and two neighborhoods were affected. (elcen.ro, hotnews.ro) ELCEN said the damage was contained inside the plant and did not cut electricity supply to homes or businesses in Bucharest. The company said repairs and technical interventions are now being planned inside CET Vest. (elcen.ro) Romania’s heating system in the capital has been under strain for months, with earlier breakdowns at CET Vest and other plants already exposing how dependent whole districts are on a small number of aging generation sites. ELCEN describes itself as Romania’s largest producer of thermal energy, and CET Vest is one of its core Bucharest units. (bucurestifm.ro, elcen.ro) There is one important gap in the public record: ELCEN and the emergency inspectorate said no victims were recorded, while an industry report published the next day said several workers were injured and no deaths were reported. The official investigation is still open, and authorities have not yet published a final cause. (elcen.ro, agerpres.ro, transformers-magazine.com) For residents, the immediate issue is simpler than the electrical chain of failure: one of the city’s major heat plants is out, another plant is carrying the load, and repairs at CET Vest will decide how long the disruption lasts.
