Air Jordan 9 OG Returns

The Air Jordan 9 OG returns August 8 in white/black/red colorway with MJ face box packaging, available in full family sizing — getting 397 likes from sneaker fans. The classic silhouette brings back original design elements from the mid-90s.

The Air Jordan 9, designed by Tinker Hatfield, was the first signature model released after Michael Jordan's initial retirement in October 1993. This made it the only Air Jordan from his original run that he never wore on the court during his dominant era with the Chicago Bulls. While Jordan was pursuing a minor league baseball career with the Birmingham Barons, a cleated version of the Air Jordan 9 was created for him on the diamond. On the basketball court, the shoe was famously worn by other NBA players like Penny Hardaway, Kendall Gill, and Mitch Richmond in exclusive colorways. Hatfield's design was inspired by Jordan's global superstardom, aiming to create a shoe that reflected his international icon status. This global theme is most evident on the outsole, which features words like "dedicated," "intense," and "freedom" in various languages including Swahili, Russian, and German, representing MJ's spirit. The shoe's silhouette drew inspiration from Japanese design, which influenced the minimalist upper and the "Rising Sun" emblem with the Jumpman logo on the heel. It also incorporated a "one-pull" speed lacing system, an inner sock sleeve like its predecessors, and Air-Sole units in both the heel and forefoot for cushioning. Despite its absence from MJ's Bulls career, the Air Jordan 9 holds a unique place in sneaker culture. It's the shoe depicted on the Michael Jordan statue outside of Chicago's United Center and was the sneaker retrieved from his trophy room by Bugs Bunny in the 1996 film "Space Jam." The original 1993-1994 release featured four colorways, including the iconic white, black, and true red. The model has been re-released, or "retroed," multiple times since 2002, allowing new generations of fans to connect with a pivotal, off-court chapter of the Jordan story.
