A Jewish senior at San Leandro High School has sued her district, principal and two former teachers over alleged antisemitic harassment and retaliation spanning two school years. (independent.co.uk) (edsource.org) The lawsuit was filed Tuesday, April 21, in Alameda County Superior Court by Eden Horwitz and her mother, Montana Horwitz, against San Leandro Unified School District and school staff. (edsource.org) (ropesgray.com) Horwitz says the harassment intensified after the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and during the war in Gaza while she was enrolled in San Leandro High’s Social Justice Academy. (jweekly.com) (nbcbayarea.com) According to the complaint, classmates demanded that Horwitz “answer for her entire people,” used “Zionist” as a slur and accused her of genocide because she is Jewish. (independent.co.uk) (jweekly.com) The suit says teachers and administrators failed to stop the conduct and, in some instances, worsened it or penalized Horwitz after she complained. District officials had not publicly responded in the reports cited by EdSource and NBC Bay Area. (jweekly.com) (edsource.org) (nbcbayarea.com) Horwitz told NBC Bay Area that after Oct. 7 she felt targeted by peers and that teachers “would agree or look the other way.” The complaint says the pressure caused panic attacks and a sharp drop in her grades. (nbcbayarea.com) (edsource.org) The filing also says Horwitz was removed from the Social Justice Academy in 2025, while the district cited academic and attendance requirements for that decision. Her lawyers say the removal was retaliation for reporting bias. (independent.co.uk) (hoodline.com) Her lawyers, including the Deborah Project and Ropes & Gray, are seeking damages and court-ordered changes, including antisemitism training, complaint-process reforms and changes to academy coursework. (jweekly.com) (ropesgray.com) The case arrives as Bay Area schools and California officials face a wider run of antisemitism and Islamophobia complaints tied to classroom speech, protests and enforcement of civil-rights rules after Oct. 7. (edsource.org) (independent.co.uk) The next step is in court, where the district will have a chance to answer the allegations and Horwitz’s claims of harassment, retaliation and academic harm will be tested.
