Wholesale Inflation Spikes Unexpectedly

Wholesale inflation in January surged more than expected, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI). The report showed a sharp 0.7% jump in goods prices excluding food and energy, reinforcing concerns that tariffs are pushing up costs for producers and could complicate the Federal Reserve's plans.

The overall Producer Price Index for final demand actually rose 0.5% in January, a figure heavily influenced by a sharp divergence between goods and services. While prices for goods fell by 0.3%, the index for services surged by 0.8%, the largest jump since July 2025. A significant driver of the decline in goods prices was a 5.5% drop in gasoline costs, which accounted for nearly 80% of the decrease in the final demand goods index. Food prices also fell by 1.5%. These drops, however, were not enough to offset the broader inflationary pressures seen elsewhere. The surge in services costs was widespread. A notable contributor was a 14.4% jump in margins for professional and commercial equipment wholesaling. Prices for transportation and warehousing services also advanced by 1.0%. On a year-over-year basis, the final demand PPI was up 2.9%. A core measure, which excludes food, energy, and trade services, rose 3.4% from a year ago, marking the ninth consecutive monthly increase and signaling persistent underlying inflation. This hotter-than-expected report has reinforced the narrative of "sticky" inflation, leading to a drop in U.S. equities as investors recalibrated expectations. The data suggests that the path to the Federal Reserve's 2% inflation target may be uneven. The impact of tariffs on specific sectors remains a key factor. In 2025, prices for aluminum, steel, and copper rose significantly, by 28%, 17%, and 11% respectively. These elevated costs for construction materials have reportedly led some clients to postpone new building projects.
