Biennale political flashpoint
Talk of reopening the Russian pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale has led the EU to threaten cutting funding, a dispute linked to tensions inside Italy’s government. At the same time, pavilion previews highlight work across the event — the UAE pavilion will present 'Washwasha', a sound-based project about whispers and shared histories, and coverage flags sculptural pieces from artists like Barry X Ball and Wallace Chan. The European Commission has threatened to freeze €2 million in funding to the Venice Biennale over the planned return of the Russian pavilion in 2026. (euronews.com) Euronews reported on April 13 that Brussels sent the warning in a letter to Biennale president Pietrangelo Buttafuoco as Russia’s participation reopened a split between Italian institutions and the European Union. (euronews.com) The 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia runs from May 9 to November 22, 2026, with preview days on May 6, 7 and 8, and the official title is *In Minor Keys*. (labiennale.org) La Biennale said the 2026 edition will include 99 National Participations and 31 Collateral Events across the Giardini, the Arsenale and other Venice sites. (labiennale.org) Russia’s return would mark its first official participation since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, after the pavilion was absent from recent editions. (euronews.com) Politico reported in March that European governments had urged organizers to reconsider, while the European Union warned it could pull support if the pavilion moved ahead. (politico.eu) At the same time, national pavilions are releasing previews of the work that will define the 2026 show, including the United Arab Emirates pavilion’s *Washwasha*, a group exhibition built around sound, memory and whispering. (thenationalnews.com) The National Pavilion United Arab Emirates said *Washwasha* will run from May 9 to November 22 and will bring together six artists: Alaa Edris, Mays Albaik, Jawad Al Malhi, Farah Al Qasimi, Lamya Gargash and Taus Makhacheva. (wam.ae) The pavilion is curated by Bana Kattan, with Tala Nassar as assistant curator, and the works examine contemporary soundscapes in the United Arab Emirates as records of migration, movement and ties to land. (wam.ae) Outside the national pavilions, Art Collector flagged sculpture-heavy Venice presentations including Barry X Ball and Wallace Chan, whose *Vessels of Other Worlds* opens in Venice on May 8 and runs through October 18. (artcollector.net.au) For now, the 2026 Biennale is taking shape on two tracks at once: a funding fight over Russia’s place in the Giardini, and a widening slate of pavilions and collateral shows opening across Venice next month.
