- The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Logan Tell DeSilva, who was taken into custody on a Thursday and charged with burglary and auto theft the following day. - The stolen vehicle, a city-owned Ford Expedition, was taken on President's Day from a garage near City Hall and was later recovered in Vallejo. - The theft was accomplished after the suspect allegedly broke into Mayor Lee's third-floor office and stole the keys to the SUV. - Security footage indicates the suspect gained access to City Hall on a Friday and camped out on the 11th floor over the holiday weekend before the theft. - Barbara Lee is Oakland's 52nd mayor and the first Black woman to hold the office, having been elected in a historic special election on April 15, 2025. - This is not the first time an Oakland mayor's vehicle has been targeted; former Mayor Sheng Thao's car was broken into in 2023. - The incident highlights a larger issue in the city, which saw nearly 15,000 cars reported stolen in 2023, the highest number in at least 15 years. - In response to the theft, Mayor Lee stated, "No one in Oakland should have to worry about their car being stolen, whether they're a resident, a city worker, or the Mayor."
