Indonesia Finalizes BrahMos Missile Deal

Indonesia has finalized a deal with India to acquire BrahMos supersonic cruise missile systems. The agreement highlights a growing trend of defense collaboration between the two nations amid rising global and regional tensions.

The deal is valued at approximately $450 million, marking one of India's most significant defense export agreements. Negotiations between New Delhi and Jakarta were in progress for over seven years, with a key step being final approval from Russia, the joint developer of the missile system. Indonesia is the second Southeast Asian nation to acquire the BrahMos missile system. The Philippines became the first international customer with a $375 million contract signed in January 2022 for three coastal anti-ship batteries. Vietnam is also a potential buyer, reflecting a regional trend among nations concerned with China's actions in the South China Sea. The BrahMos is a two-stage supersonic cruise missile capable of flying at speeds of Mach 2.8, nearly three times the speed of sound. Developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India's DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, its high speed and low-altitude sea-skimming capability make it difficult to intercept. This acquisition is a component of Indonesia's broader military modernization efforts, specifically to bolster its defenses around the Natuna Islands. The area borders the South China Sea and has seen an increase in incursions by Chinese vessels into Indonesia's exclusive economic zone. The sale builds on an existing framework of military cooperation established by the 2018 Defence Cooperation Agreement between India and Indonesia. The armed forces of both nations already engage in regular joint exercises, including the "Samudra Shakti" naval drills and the "Garuda Shakti" army exercises. The BrahMos missile can be launched from land-based mobile launchers, ships, and aircraft like the Sukhoi-30MKI. While the standard export version has a range of 290 kilometers, Indian armed forces operate variants with extended ranges of up to 450 kilometers.
