Sanderson Inspires Utah Youth at StoryCon
Brandon Sanderson joined dozens of authors at StoryCon in Utah over the weekend, leading workshops on reading and writing to inspire young readers. The event highlighted how reading transformed their lives, with Sanderson emphasizing its impact on Utah's youth. Fans continue praising Sanderson over George R.R. Martin for completing epic series like *The Wheel of Time* sequels versus unfinished works, crediting his intricate plotting abilities.
StoryCon is Utah's largest literacy event, drawing around 3,500 people to the Salt Palace Convention Center. Organized by the nonprofit Operation Literacy, the convention aims to combat declining literacy rates by uniting authors, educators, and young readers. Author and Utah resident Brandon Sanderson was a keynote speaker and credits a similar convention he attended at age 18 in Nebraska with invigorating his passion for writing. He has openly shared his own past as a "reluctant reader," only becoming an A-student after discovering a love for books in his teens. In addition to leading workshops, Sanderson uses his platform to mentor aspiring authors, teaching a creative writing course at Brigham Young University and making his lectures available for free online. He also supports local literacy through his Lightweaver Foundation, which recently helped donate thousands of his books to a Salt Lake City high school. The fan comparisons to George R.R. Martin stem from Sanderson's prolific output and his completion of Robert Jordan's epic *The Wheel of Time* series. Following Jordan's death in 2007, his widow selected Sanderson to finish the final book based on extensive notes. What was planned as a single final volume, *A Memory of Light*, became a three-book conclusion under Sanderson's pen due to the sheer amount of material Jordan left. The volumes, *The Gathering Storm* (2009), *Towers of Midnight* (2010), and *A Memory of Light* (2013), brought the acclaimed series to a definitive end. Meanwhile, fans of George R.R. Martin's *A Song of Ice and Fire* have been waiting for the sixth book, *The Winds of Winter*, since the fifth installment was released in 2011. Martin has stated he is still hundreds of pages from finishing the manuscript. Martin has expressed that if he does not finish the series, there is no plan for another author to step in, and it will remain incomplete. He has also told fans that the ending of his book series will differ from the conclusion of the HBO television adaptation, *Game of Thrones*.
