Starved Rock trail upgrades

Illinois’ Starved Rock State Park is getting major trail upgrades in 2026, but key routes — including the iconic 0.6-mile hike up to the sandstone butte — remain open for spring visits. Matthiessen State Park is being recommended as a nearby alternative for canyon and waterfall hiking while works continue (islands.com).

The state Capital Development Board says the trail work is an $18 million package for trails and timber structures and is part of a broader $33.8 million state investment that also covers sanitary wastewater, water filtration upgrades and replacement vault toilets. (cdb.illinois.gov — ) Project specs released by CDB list targeted work by canyon: Tonti and LaSalle Canyon work will renovate or replace 10 trail bridges, add three new timber stairways and install new timber boardwalks with fencing. (cdb.illinois.gov — ) The same CDB release details Lower French Canyon’s River Trail and Jacob’s Ladder will see three bridge replacements plus new stairways, while Pontiac Canyon, the River Trail, Campunula Trail and the lodge bridge to St. Louis Canyon are also slated for bridge, decking or stairway work. (cdb.illinois.gov — ) State officials announced the program on Nov. 14, 2025 and said construction would begin in winter 2025 and continue through most of 2026. (cdb.illinois.gov — )(NPR Illinois — ) Local trail monitors list several closures in March 2026, naming Lone Tree Canyon staircase, Tonti Canyon bridge and Tonti Canyon, Own Canyon overlook, the brown bluff trail above French Canyon, and the boat-launch trail to St. Louis Canyon as “closed until further notice.” (starvedrockhikers.com — ) Park officials and the IDNR are posting rolling updates and urge visitors to check the Starved Rock visitor center and the park’s weekly Friday Facebook posts because closures and detours may change daily or weekly. (dnr.illinois.gov — ) IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie noted it had been about 30 years since a major trail overhaul, and the park draws roughly 2–2.5 million visitors annually — figures officials cite when framing the need for safety and erosion-control work. (RiverBender.com — )(cdb.illinois.gov — ) Nearby Matthiessen State Park is showing no reported closures on local trail dashboards as of the latest update, and park trackers note St. Louis Canyon remains accessible via alternate Starved Rock trails despite the boat-launch closure.
