Twin Lakes is located about 9 miles southwest of Bridgeport, CA, in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The pair of alpine lakes, Upper Twin Lake (286 acres) and Lower Twin Lake (399 acres), sit at approximately 7,000 feet elevation. Often called part of the "Californian Alps," the scenic basin borders the Hoover Wilderness, offering views toward Yosemite. The area is a gateway to backcountry adventures, with trails like Tamarack and Horse Creek leading into the Hoover Wilderness. Twin Lakes is also the northern terminus of the Sierra High Route. One popular hike is the Horse & Cattle Creek Canyon loop, offering views of Sawtooth Ridge. For those seeking relaxation, natural hot springs are a short drive away. Travertine Hot Springs, about 12 miles from Twin Lakes, features pools with views of the Sierra Nevada. Buckeye Hot Springs offers pools alongside Buckeye Creek, requiring a short hike. The lakes are renowned for trout fishing, stocked annually with rainbow, brown, brook, and Lahontan cutthroat trout, and kokanee salmon. Upper Twin Lake held the state record for the largest brown trout caught in 1987. Fishing season runs from late April through mid-November.
