SRH hit 100+ in Powerplay

Sunrisers Hyderabad became the first team in IPL history to score more than 100 runs inside the Powerplay, driven by an explosive opening stand from Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head — a new scoring benchmark even though they lost the match. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) (sportstar.thehindu.com)

Sunrisers Hyderabad blasted 105 without loss in the first six overs against Punjab Kings on April 11, the fastest 100-plus Powerplay in Indian Premier League history. (espncricinfo.com) Abhishek Sharma made 74 from 28 balls with eight sixes, and Travis Head added 38 from 23 as the opening stand reached 105 by the end of the Powerplay and 120 before the first wicket fell in the ninth over. (espncricinfo.com) In Twenty20 cricket, the Powerplay is the first six overs, when the fielding side can keep only two fielders outside the 30-yard circle. That rule gives openers more space to attack, and Sunrisers Hyderabad used all of it in New Chandigarh. (sportstar.thehindu.com) The innings still ended at 219 for 6, after Punjab Kings slowed the scoring once Shashank Singh dismissed both openers in the same over. Punjab Kings then chased 220 in 18.5 overs to win by six wickets. (espncricinfo.com) Punjab Kings got 50s from Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya and captain Shreyas Iyer, who finished unbeaten on 69 from 33 balls and was named player of the match. Shashank Singh, whose 3 overs cost 20 runs and brought 2 wickets, also hit the winning runs. (espncricinfo.com) The record sits inside a larger Sunrisers Hyderabad trend. Sportstar’s running list of top Indian Premier League Powerplays shows the franchise also owns 125 for 0 against Delhi Capitals in 2024 and 107 for 0 against Lucknow Super Giants in 2024. (sportstar.thehindu.com) That means three of the highest first-six-over totals in league history now belong to the same team, built around all-out hitting at the top of the order. The 105 for 0 against Punjab Kings also matched Kolkata Knight Riders’ 105 for 0 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2017 on the all-time list. (sportstar.thehindu.com) The match also showed the limit of that approach. ESPNcricinfo’s live report noted that scoring became harder after the first six overs in both innings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad lost momentum once the opening burst ended. (espncricinfo.com) So the night produced two numbers at once: 105 in six overs, and 223 in 18.5. Sunrisers Hyderabad reset the Powerplay mark, and Punjab Kings still took the points.
